His is indeed an interesting example of what is possible (hmm, am I arguing with myself here?) because as an “urban” DJ he had never supposed there was something in opera that might appeal to him. Through his entire adult musical life, it had passed him by and then bam! on the strength of listening to one aria he underwent his Damascene conversion. Opera companies need to keep trying to make connections but the temptation is to take the easy route; Hip Hop Cosi or celebrity participation… need I say more? We sometimes appear afraid of our own artform.

From a televisual point of view there is something compelling about watching the participants of Maestro go through the nerve-shredding experience of standing in front of an orchestra. Anybody who has done so (and we give people the chance at the OHP Open Day in our ‘Minute Maestro’ activity) will know what an unreconstructed monster a full orchestra can be so you have to admire them for their grit. And despite everything, I always marvel at the guts of amateurs on BGT who do what they do in front of millions (and for Jonathan we should reserve some special praise because he is clearly a deeply shy and self-conscious young man). Performing is never an easy thing to do at any level.

Perhaps I am being too idealistic and these programmes are better than nothing, but the overwhelming feeling I am left with is that we are almost there, on the verge of real breakthroughs, but TV Land is just too afraid to get serious with it, choosing instead to introduce a celebrity angle in a dot-to-dot representation of the world of classical music; the premise being that you might not be interested in this but you will be when we show you how difficult it is to sing/conduct/act etc. And better still, we will get someone really unexpected to do it and possibly make a real tit of themselves. I suppose many mean well but then again Office 2011 MAC Key, maybe they are right because despite the cheers, irritating standing ovations during the performance and the millions of YouTube hits, the British public eventually voted for the dog who can walk on its hind legs. Ultimately, we get the culture we deserve, right?

American Idol viewers made a similar choice several years ago for Castera, Samuel and Pedro. Their names are not familiar to American Idol enthusiasts. They were never finalists in the televised singing competition. They live far from the spotlight. They don’t even own a television, yet alone have electricity to power it. But Americans helped rewrite their future and thousands of preschoolers like them.

It was 2007, and Americans tuned into the first Idol Gives Back television charity special and dug deep into their pockets to give generously. With nearly one million dollars in donations, Save the Children, in partnership with the government of Mozambique and other local NGOs, launched one of the first preschool programs in rural Mozambique, a country in sub-Saharan Africa where HIV and AIDS have frayed the fabric of family life, leaving many young children parentless.

Driving off the main paved highway in Mozambique and down rutted dirt roads, it can take hours to reach any of the 30 villages where our preschool program began in 2008. There, in what feels like the middle of nowhere, you will hear the cackle of kids playing outside on the swings of their playground or see children writing the letter “a” on black slates while sitting on the floor in their classrooms made of reeds and straw.

The American Idol donation helped fund materials for classrooms, playgrounds and latrines, along with simple school supplies like floor mats, blackboards, storybooks and pencils. This donation allowed Save the Children to train teachers, parents and community members as well. And replica watches, the communities also chipped in replica watches, providing materials for construction and volunteering their time to build the structures, make toys and teach at the schools.

Four years later, the results of the preschool program are in. And, it turns out all the preschoolers are winners. A recent World Bank study of Save the Children’s preschool programs in Mozambique — the first of its kind in Africa — shows that preschoolers were 24 percent more likely to enroll in primary school and were significantly better equipped to learn than children not in preschool. How great is that? And, the study also finds that children going to preschool are much more likely to show interest in math and writing, recognize shapes and show respect for other children, than those not in preschool.

And, here’s the kicker. Preschool benefited the preschoolers’ families, too. The study finds that parents of enrolled children are 26 percent likelier to work, and older siblings are more likely to go to school themselves. And, for as little as about $2.50 a month per child in Mozambique, preschool is not only an affordable investment, it also reaps returns for years to come.

The value of getting early education boost cannot be understated. That’s why this week, as part of the Global Campaign for Education’s Global Action Week, advocates around the globe want to bring attention to early childhood programs and press the U.S. government to maintain funding for these critical basic education programs both in the U.S. and abroad. The stark truth is that for many children globally, early learning programs are still a luxury. Even here in the U.S., children living in poverty in rural areas have few options.

In Mozambique alone, only four percent of its nation’s children under age 5 go to preschool. Before preschool came to their villages, children spent their days laboring in the field with their mothers replica watches, helping to cart water, pull weeds or chase the baboons away from the crops. Others were left at home alone to care for younger siblings or to entertain themselves, with no learning materials — no crayons, no books, no toys — or structured play.

Without a foundation of learning, children step into the classroom for the first time unprepared. It is like asking someone to sing a tune without the notes. They don’t know where to start. They don’t know how to piece it together. They have no coaches to help them. As a result, they quickly become overwhelmed. Many stop going to school in first or second grade, tragically shutting the door on learning and opportunity early in life. Early education is the track on which life-long learning is built. At preschool, children acquire social, motor and thinking skills, and build their knowledge of letters, words and numbers.

The dream of going to preschool will soon be within reach for many more children in Mozambique and throughout the African continent. The Mozambican government, encouraged by the World Bank findings, will bring early learning to more villages across the nation later this year. And, other African countries are studying the research results and seeing how they can copy the preschool program in their own countries.

For this, American Idol fans can take a bow. Thanks to them, African preschoolers will be poised to step out on the stage of school and life, and shine.

Among the handful of Democrats in competitive Senate races, only two offered full  support for the president’s newfound position.

“I am proud of President Obama’s strong record of promoting fairness and equality. These are values I share, that we all share, and the pride I take in the President’s recognition today comes not just at a deeply personal level, but also because he has done the right thing for so many people,” said Rep. Tammy Baldwin, the openly gay congresswoman running for Wisconsin’s open Senate seat.

If elected, Baldwin would become the nation’s first openly gay senator.  ”I am pleased that the president has today joined a growing number of people across the country who are moving forward on the issue of marriage equality and equal opportunity for all Americans,” she said in a statement posted to her website.

Rep. Shelly Berkley, D-Nev., similarly backed Obama’s stance in full. “I have been a longtime supporter of  marriage equality for all Americans and am glad President Obama has embraced this civil right,” Berkley said in a statement provided through her campaign.

The rest, however, either split with the president, were noncommittal, or didn’t say anything.

Rep. Joe Donnelly, running for Senate against Republican Richard Mourdock in Indiana, flatly rejected the president’s view. The Associated Press reported Thursday that Donnelly affirmed his position that marriage only exists between a man and a woman and did not feel pressured to change that view in light of Obama’s conversion.

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., who was elected in 2006 and now faces uncertain reelection prospects, also split from the president. Tester “supports civil unions for committed same-sex couples, but in Montana, marriage is between one man and one woman,” spokeswoman Andrea Helling told Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

The campaign of Heidi Heitkamp, the Democratic Senate candidate in North Dakota did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Two other candidates walked a narrow line of supporting Obama without fully agreeing with him.

Sen. Claire McCaskill Tattoo Gun Needles, running a tough reelection race against the winner of a three-way Republican primary, deferred to the president without endorsing his view. “Claire recognizes this is a very personal issue for many Missourians,” Senate spokesman John LaBombard told the Springfield News-Leader, adding that McCaskill believes states should “take the lead in determining marriage equality. “ The state of Missouri’s position on this issue has been clearly established since 2004 and nothing about today’s announcement changes that.” Missouri voters backed a gay-marriage ban 71 percent to 29 percent in August 2004.

Virginia’s Tim Kaine, the former Democratic National Committee chairman and Obama loyalist, seems to hold the view Obama did before the president announced his shift on Wednesday.

At a breakfast hosted by the Democratic think tank Third Way on Tuesday, a day before Obama’s ABC interview, Kaine reacted to Vice President Biden’s support for gay marriage. “I believe in the legal equality of relationships,” Kaine said. “The debate about Tattoo Gun, you know, is it marriage? Is it civil union? Is it domestic partnership? I just kind of let that one go and say should committed couples be treated the same by law, and I think the answer is yes.” In those statements, Kaine essentially endorsed the position Obama held before announcing his shift on Wednesday.

Campaign spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine reaffirmed that stance to the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Thursday, a day after Obama’s interview.

RIYADH–Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to discuss the sale of a number of missile-defense systems to Arab nations as a way to counter the looming Iranian threat.

Secretary Clinton will meet with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh on Saturday to discuss a regional security plan.

“In order to protect the Gulf, no one nation can protect itself,” a senior US official said. “We are working to address missile defense in the region.”

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and patriot missile defense systems will likely be part of the “building blocks” for this new initiative. Countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Kuwait already possess some of these systems.

In 2011 the U.S. finalized the sale of THAAD missiles to UAE.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait already have Patriot missiles, along with deals in place to upgrade to modern missile-defense systems.

The idea behind establishing a new Strategic Cooperation Forum is meant to unite Gulf States instead of dealing with each country’s security issues solely on a one-on-one basis, according to U.S. officials.

The discussions on regional security come a day before 60 countries will gather in Turkey for the “Friends of Syria” conference.

Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations are pushing the White House to arm Syrian rebels. But talk of a no-fly zone or even military intervention may be waning.

“The Americans said no weapons will go to the rebels, but what about communications devices or satellite coordinates so the opposition will  know where the Syrian tanks are?” a Saudi official told ABC News.

For now it appears the White House’s strategy will concentrate on getting a steady flow of humanitarian aid into Syria and attempting to end the bloodshed.

“Our main focus with partners is trying to get Assad’s guns silenced Tattoo Machines For Cheap,” said a senior State Department official.

On Friday, Secretary Clinton also met with Saudi King Abdullah. The two discussed Iran and future sanctions that the country will face.

You get the picture, and so does Cadillac: with the CTS-V it launched its own assault on the best European machinery. But while an ATS-V is expected to follow with the same formula applied to GM’s new 3 Series rival, don’t expect the same of the Cadillac XTS flagship.

According to reports, Cadillac has ruled out the possibility of an XTS-V. While it’s nice to see that Porsche and Nissan are going to be active at NAIAS 2010, we’re a bit disappointed at the level of participation. At least the show will top the down year that was NAIAS 2009, but it looks like we may still be a ways away from the grandeur of shows gone by.
